 | Silkroad OnlineGameplay
After giving a name the player selects a "Figure", characters with a small backstory, character height and volume, which will not be relevant to gameplay and will alter only the character's appearance. Two fields chosen when creating that do alter gameplay are the starting clothing type, between Armor, Protector and Garment, and starting weapon. However, both can be changed during gameplay.
Gaining experience
Similar to most MMORPGs, characters increase skills and levels by gaining experience points through combat or quests. In combat, the amount of points gained are determined by the type of monster killed. For points gained through quests, the amount of points is proportional to its difficulty. Characters also gain "Job experience points" by successfully completing objectives for a profession, such as a merchant completing a trade run or a hunter killing a thief.
Points are divided into three types, Experience Points (XP), Skill Points (SP) and Job Experience. Experience points are used to increase the character's level. Skill Points are used to raise masteries and skills. Job Experience gives Job Levels which will in future updates provide bonuses.
Characters in Silkroad can choose between applying permanently these stats between Strength and Intelligence. Strength leads to bulkier and physically stronger characters, while Intelligence improves the character's abilities with magic and supernatural skills. After leveling up the character gets 5 Stat Points, one is automatically applied to Strength and one is applied to Intelligence. The other three points are free for the player to chose in which stat to apply. While it is possible to make mix Strength and Intelligence, characters having either pure Strength or Intelligence are the best in one-on-one combat. Characters with mixed Strength and Intelligence balance are called "hybrids" in game jargon.
Combat
Combat is similar to other fantasy-themed MMORPGs. Attributes such as damage and defence are defined by the character's abilities and items. Most combat skills increase the physical or magical damage dealt by a weapon.
Character death to monsters is punished with Experience Loss. Job Experience can be lost on certain ocasions, like a hunter dying to a thief. Skill Points aren't lost unless the character is a murderer.
Parties can be formed to provide experience bonuses. Small 4 characters parties give an experience bonus regardless of the distance between its members, being a popular way of shortening leveling times. Large 8 characters parties give even higher bonuses, but require its members to stay on a short distance of each other, and due to the usually small population of monsters on a small area this party method is rarely used for this purpose, being then used usually for trade runs or thief gangs.
PvM combat
Many of the monsters are taken from the mythology of the region it replicates from real life. Chinese mythology is currently predominant as it's the only region currently avaiable. Most monsters have different variations of changing difficulties, like Champion and Giant brands. Monsters can either be passive to player action, reacting only when attacked, or agressive, attacking any player inside it's range.
High level unique monsters will appear several times each day. These unique enemies will spawn other monsters around them as they are damaged. Unique enemies drop special items. There are currently three unique monsters, Tiger Girl (also Tiger Woman), Ureuchi (also Uruchi), and Isyutaru (also Isyutareu). There is a fourth unique monster in other servers, Lord Yarkan, that isn't released on the International servers yet.
Player vs Player combat
Player versus player (PvP) combat can be played in three different ways. The most friendly one is Cape Fight. Once a player equips a cape, he can be attacked by other cape users that have a different color with the exception of the Prodigy cape, which can be attacked by any color even other Prodigies. This way of PvP leads to loss only of potions or items used on the fight, being able even to ressurect at the instant and location where the person died.
The most common PvP combat is through jobs, since fighting while acting on one is inevitable. Job PvP is popular because it involves risks such as loss of goods and experience, while the winner gets a chance to have the goods and wins experience from defeating another player of opposite alignment.
Silkroad also allows murdering, outside-bounds PvP. Murderers have imposed on them many punishments like being attacked by anyone, losing experience and skill experience and dropping items, taking much work to "clear" from this situation, so it is rarely practiced by any player.
Jobs
Players can pick a job early in the game. a merchant, a hunter or a thief. Merchants buy goods for normal price on a city and attempt to bring them to another city, where they can be sold for higher prices making profits. Thieves attempt to rob the merchant and steal the goods, so they can sell it to the black market. Merchants may hire hunters to protect themselves from thieves. Characters can switch freely between jobs and are not locked into a role. Being a competitive enviroment between players, Player versus Player combat between different alignments is allowed.
Item trading
Players can set up stalls to sell and advertise their items. The seller determines the price at which to sell each item, although it is possible for buyers to communicate within the stall window. As NPCs sell a limited selection of items, stalls are a popular way to acquire high level or unusual items, such as those with seals.
Guilds
More experienced players can create guilds. A guild allows its members to chat with each other and participate in guild wars. With money and time, guilds can grow allowing more options like forming alliances, a guild storage and more members. Future patches will include guild quests, guild marks, union marks and other bonuses.
Pets
The Pet system allows characters to summon animals to aid them on certain tasks. Most pets have to be bought with Silk on the Item Mall, however the Grey Wolf can be bought with in-game gold. Pet Myowon (Monkey) and Pet Seowon (Squirrel) pick up the items dropped by monsters for the player. They have their own inventory and save time by doing this task automatically. White Wolves and Grey Wolves are combat pets that have their own stats and gain experience by killing enemies.
Items
Equipment
Equipment is split into weapons, shields, body protection and accessories.
Weapons: There are five brands of weapons. Blades and swords attack quickly and are one-handed, allowing the character to use a shield for defence. Glaives and spears attack slower and more powerful attacks and deal more damage, but are two-handed. Bows attack fairly quick from a distance and deal reasonable damage.
Shields: Shields can be equipped if the character uses a one-handed weapon, increasing defence and giving the character a chance to block a few blows.
Body protection: Between Armor, Garment and Protectors. Each brand of protection gives defence to a particular area, Armor protecting against physical blows, Garment against magical blows and Protector having mediocre defence to both areas. Wearing Protector or Garment also gives bonuses to speed and reduces MP used.
Accessories: In addition to clothing, characters may also wear accessories such as rings, necklaces and earrings.
There are several types of items on Silkroad. Most items are "Normal" as they possess only regular properties. Any equipment can have special properties that boost a certain characteristic of the character, usually called "Blue" due to changed name color. Rarer items are called "Seal", that are stronger versions of normal units, appearing on three different levels of strength. Since everything other than Seal property can be changed using alchemy, it is common to find customized items, each with different properties.
Item Mall
The Item Mall allows a character to buy items (with "Silk", game currency bought with real money) through the official site. Examples include an experience-enhancing scroll, a pet monkey and decorations for a player's stall.
Masteries and Skills
In Silkroad Online, skills are divided between weapon and elemental masteries. Within each mastery, there are many series of skills that can be learnt.
Weapon Masteries
Bicheon Swordmanship: For swords and blades.
Heuksal Spearmanship: For spears and glaives.
Pacheon Bowmanship: For bows.
Elements Masteries
Fire
Lightning
Cold
Force
Future Development
There are plans to add European and Arab characters to the game, each with their own styles of play. New minor updates are being added constantly.
Game problems and exploits
Like many massively mulitplayer games, SRO has many problems. One of the major problems was the heavy load on the servers. It could often take more than a dozen attempts to successfully login, however, this problem has been reduced by the introduction of new servers. Another major problem is the lag encountered in towns.
Random crashes can occur, even as soon as the game has loaded. When the game crashes while a character is in combat, the character usually dies. The engine may also crash when buying or selling items from a stall. If the computer has ethernet problems, the game may cause it to shut down or reboot.
The official English version of the game is written in a combination of British English and American English (for example, both "defense" and "defence" in the same window). In addition, there are many basic grammar ("To be a success as a trader [...]"), spelling (glavie) and punctuation (however without commas) mistakes.
The game also has framerate problems, even on high-end computers or with the level of detail minimized. This is especially true in high-polygon areas, such as cities or other crowded battlefields.
